"A Wonderful Book" Bestseller Book Review

'Riveting Memoir

Having attend school with the author, I never noticed his limitations or insecurities. I remember a young man with an engaging grin and a friendly hello as we passed in the hallways. As he says "we are more alike than we are different." As a man, the author has become a successful artist, creating beautiful works of art through his paintbrush. The memoir was riveting and I finished the book in one sitting. I recommend this book to anyone who has obstacles to overcome or fears to face.

2013 Year in Review

2013 Year in Review & Change

Ok, so you would think that 2012 was enough of a trip and that perhaps since I found a place of rest, that my energy would be a little slower… Yeah, that’s what happens alright!

2012 ended with a number of exciting events that involved both my creative and personal life. As I began painting and reading myself for the Opening of CC Gallery here in Paducah Kentucky, I also found myself engaged in authoring both my second book, The Unbroken Path and the Screenplay for Norma Jean’s Sun. Of which both are still in development and yet to be complete. More about that in a moment, but for now, I will say that the year 2012 ended with the Painting Phoenix gaining notice as the center piece in Fountain Avenue Methodists Holiday Display and rolled into 2013 with much interest.

“Phoenix” 2012 – Acrylic on Canvas – www.kriscourtney.com

The collection of artistry that I found myself producing, gained inspiration and movement from my personal life and my creative energy this year. As many of you who have followed my path know, I live a transparent life and that over the last year left me in a vulnerable position with a lover that tore through my heart and daily affairs. I swore to myself once that I would never allow myself to feel that much pain over a failed attempt at love, yet even in my years of trial and error, I found myself both pulled & used in an affair that truly left me bleeding … So what do I do, I create a painting that becomes my fastest selling original to date and was purchased off the easel literally the hour I put the brush down …

In the lessons learned though, the failed relationship continued to appear on my doorstep and the pain associated took a while for this old man to heal. It has been through the guidance of love from others who care for my sanity, welfare and spirit that I am ever so grateful for the hours of talk and inspiration to come terms with the truth of what my part in a very narcissistic and perverse game where I played the fool and the toy… However, as I have always spoken to others when asked to consult – Never allow the pain of your Past to Control your Future! Speak the truth, present the truth and live with the results! My only regret is the harm that was done to others by this individual and the extent of the illness at which I was too blind to see. I was in love with a person incapable of loving through a personality disorder illness that I could not understand. I found great empathy in my view of what I carry a visible disability, theirs cannot be seen except through events and knowledge – God’s Healing Grace

SO in preparation to the Opening of CC Gallery, an entire collection of New Art was created including a couple of noted items. The following images are all new works created just for the May 18th, 2013 Show! Also pictured are selected paintings just created this year …

These works along with previous originals were on display during the Lowertown Arts & Music Festival on May 18th as I opened CC Gallery at 6th & Harrison in Paducah KY. This festival, more of a craft & music party, included artists and talent that happen to include Garcia & Scott! Serendipity …

Yep, that’s them, dear friends Gary & Dalia ( garciaandscott.com ) whom we all ventured from the Jewel of artistry, Oxford Ohio. What a Serendipitous event of traveling across country to only find ourselves joined together again. The stage at which Gary and Dalia performed was literally outside my front door and when finished at 5pm, they were guest stars attending the party. I am so blessed to have them along with a dear love friend from Columbus Ohio, Robin who traveled for this event as well, I am humbled at the support & love shown …

The Entire collection of Party Pictures can be seen by following the FaceBook Album LINK:

The party attended by many, including local celebrities’ Mayor Gayle Kaler, Laura Emerson (WPSD 6TV), and local Master Acoustics Musician Danny Granstaff, folks found refreshments and catering by Master Chef Jay. The event also included a “Party Canvas” that later was purchased by a local philanthropist and donated to Martha’s Vineyard Food Pantry.

Martha’s Vineyard - Find more Info, please call: (270) 575-0021

Attending Artists included Mary Ruth “TuTu”, Ann Fraley (Fabric & Textiles), Jannette Parent and the talent of local sculpture Linda Ogden (Of which was very ‘Proud gentleman sitting) All who attended found the display amusing in jest. The Native American Jewelry, Ink Prints, Hand Crafted items and the collage talents of TuTu gave compliment to the arrangement of originals on loan as well. These originals included “Over Easy, Santa Fe” (Shipped from New Mexico), “Mirror” (Which Sold during the Show), and “Par Fore” & “Siesta” on loan from a private collection out of Ohio. The newly created painting “Yule Tide” also sold during show. Special shout out to Lana Sirk & Family …

Although there are many people to thank for the support and encouragement of my 2nd Gallery Opening, I must extend a couple genuine thank you to those who made it possible. Dan Babenco, Julie Hart, Christine Granstaff (who also provided chair massage) and her Husband Danny who provided the musical entertainment, and the Patrons who purchased Originals – Bless you …

“Cross of Fire” is a Commission that I was asked to present this year to a family who had the very core of the family pulled and burned out from under the very ground they stood. As a family watched their home burn to the ground, I was over whelmed with gratitude when asked to create a symbol for the new home. The request was that to bring strength and abstract view of God’s Power and as the house that burned failed to qwench their fire for life, so does this image give rise to His Glory … This painting hung inside the Gallery Show as well and became a focal point for many conversations.

A note here about what I found in this exhibit. Although the area art community is more of a fabric and craft environment, I was very glad that for this day, those who attended were able to enjoy Fine Art, Music, Fellowship and Pleasure in my Talents and others who presented …. Including an Invite by Mayor Kaler to submit work by Jannette and myself to a Mayoral 4th of July Celebration for the City Government of Paducah Kentucky. This show was proudly displayed in City Hall and included a print (AP002) of “ACT” This now makes the 2nd high profile government installation that this painting has now been featured. As many of you know , the original print was accepted and “proudly displayed” in the US Speaker of the House Office of John Boehner. The honor is one that I take with great pride and acknowledge the strength of the image and what it speaks to those who view it …

As the summer began to carry through, I have found myself at a lost for the lack of art traffic and actual true commercial value of what is offered here. In finding this, I still have many efforts that continue to engage my attention in authoring my second book, “The Unbroken Path” and the screenplay of Norma Jean’s Sun. Both of which are still in development and have drawn an Ebb & Flo reaction from my creativity and efforts. I reach a point of surrender in writing and will retract back to the canvas for a while and then find myself with new energy to write, it’s a process that I am following eagerly. Although the original goal was to have the screenplay well advanced by now, it continues to stay relative to a timeframe established in Santa Fe by those of us involved …

In light of that, this “Editors Release” was published on December 15th, 2009. And no different than previous Year in Review letters, I am extending a Free PDF Kindle Download of 72 hours in honor of that publication and the continued #1 bestseller ranking & reviews. In addition, this year I would also like to offer to anyone who cares or finds interest, a Signed Author copy & modest reduction in Gift as a show of benevolence to those who have been kind to my journey. I would like to offer a $15 Limited Time copy to those who ask and pay online. If interested, send payment to PayPal kriscourtney@yahoo.com

Another painting that found great attention during the Gallery Opening was “Flossie”(named for my grandmother by my Fans)  As I do with most places that I travel and see in this journey, I have made it a point to allow and create an inspiring image relative to the location. Paducah, sitting on the Ohio River in a region known as the Four Rivers, “Tow” (Tug) Boat and Maritime traffic is based and managed through this port for many parts of the United States. The Ingram Organization and the International Maritime Institute (North American Seamans Church Institute) North Americas largest maritime service. As the result of a Benevolent Gift from the Original owener of this painting, “Flossie” is now a permanent asset to the collection and proudly displayed in the main building, availble for viewing …

SO here I am, summer has fallen and winter appears too soon. My path in Paducah has been a challenge and yet all in the same, I have found people to be of warm spirit once known. But in that, I am quickly finding direction that leads away from here. Last year, I told you that I was finally able to “UnPack” for the first time in a couple years, which time of change has returned. I committed when I began a 5 year window of artistry, creativity and exploration to travel for the purpose of what God’s path reveals. Although at times I suffer from unrest, my desire remains loyal to my artistry. I have found that part of my soul hungry and need of nourishment above what this area has provided. The need may change in time, as it always will. But today, I am pulled to search again. Ultimately, I do not want to be cast upon a porch asking myself, why … I came to Paducah 5 years ago and 3 times after before moving. Although the experience is exactly that, experience. I seriously would not put this on my destination list and should have followed my first instinct 3 years ago and traveled past. But as with most choices, hind sight appears with clarity. I have some dear friends here as a result, and for that – I am grateful

Health wise, this past year has been a bit of a struggle, perhaps more mental than physical. I have learned a lot about people this year, more so than I suspected. I placed my hand on the hot stove more than once before understanding; life learned the hard way again. My heart is open, my love is still clean and life transparent. However, I do find myself guarded more than before, callus to the trust and vacant from the acceptance. An ideal of love purely given is truly of Divine is perhaps doubted more than previously. A view I strive to ignore and take great comfort in knowing this alley of shadows has kept me shielded from the winds. A year of devotion to God’s Church harvested little yet granted me much more than anticipated. A day of Grace, a view of an Angel from a distance, a taste of tenderness and a breathe of hope that you also can find your strength, that is what I am wishing you this Holiday. A season of change that will grant you inspiration of love, truth and trust in that change will be Okay…

See you all next year from my new destination and hope your travels are safe, Bless you - Kris

Fall Preview 2012 - eBook Download

Free eBook  Download - Amazon Kindle Edition

Available for 72 Hours, Norma Jean's Sun, Memoir by Kris Courtney is on Kindle and ready for download & Fall review September 15th thru 17th - FREE !!!

The story is not only convincingly true, but will rivet the reader with its genuine and unassuming pathos. Norma Jean's Sun is painfully reflective yet ultimately hopeful, a story told through the eyes of a boy who believes he has been mistakenly born into the world and a man who conquers physical and emotional injustice--and thrives. The reader will be challenged to answer the questions of right and wrong as they may apply to his or her own life. It is clear that it is the hope of this author that the reader's conclusions will lead to a more fulfilled view of the "parallel beauty that lives just beneath the surface for us all."

5.0 out of 5 stars We all want the same thing, to belong, August 29, 2012

This review is from: Norma Jean's Sun: True Story (Paperback)
Make sure you have time allotted to read the whole book once you open it. I picked it up, started reading it and found that I couldn't put it down. You have to get on board with Kris and take his journey with him. This book is not for the faint of heart as it deals with things that are titillatingly taboo. Kris kept getting knocked down by things in his life that were out of his control as a child. But, he seemed to find a way to get back up again. He took a self destructive path to try to find his way as an adult only to further knock himself down and then struggle to get back up again. Kris proves that he was a resilient child and becomes a man of great stamina in dealing with all that life has to throw at him. My heart broke every time his heart was broken. My tears flowed every time his tears flowed. And, my mind went through his anguish every time he hit an ultimate low in his life. We see the world with our own eyes, with our own perspective. Kris allows us to see the world through his eyes, look at life from his perspective and it will change how you look at yourself and your own life. -Pamela Writtenhouse Enos

"AMAZING MEMOIR" G. Sterling Zinsmeyer

So if you felt a little ripped off by Jim Frey’s book A Million Little Pieces I strongly urge you to pick up or download Norma Jean's Sun, Memoir

Courtney weaves family secrets, with physical & emotional challenges in a life’s journey that will leave you breathless. Faced with unspeakable physical challenges Kris Courtney moves through his life experiences sometimes bravely sometimes embracing despair but always perceiving his life challenges with insights that will touch your core!

I was humbled by reading this book in a way that totally surprised me. All of us have our challenges in life but I was in awe not only by his conquest but also the depths to which he sunk and survived.

Mr. Courtney not only has a sense of humor about his exploits and situation but also  somehow keeps his sense of proportion in recalling his past.

This is not just another memoir of recovery, it’s a tale of courage, family failings and devotion and most of all self discovery. One man’s detached observation of his family, himself, and life ‘s twists, turns and fate!

It will leave you with much more of a willingness to accept
life’s  erratic patterns with a zest for self discovery and adventure!

2011 Year in Review & Gratitude

2011 Year in Review & Gratitude

Well, as 2010 ended I thought that I was going to get a break in activity – Yeah Right!

On January 3, 2011 I received in the mail a Federal Issued document that was a response from Honorable US Speaker of the House, John Boehner. The letter was an extension of gratitude to me for a first run AP of the Oil Painting “ACT” and my True Story Memoir I sent to Mr. Boehner. He was appreciative and has now “Proudly Displayed” my art in his office, I’m humbled. What a great start to the new year and I am fully aware of the responsibility that this carries, thank you …

As the year continued, tasks and efforts began ramping up for the soon to be “Suit Case Full of Blues” Foster-Child Enrichment Blues Concert in association and featuring Jimmy D Rogers. In the summer previous, Jimmy had asked during a conversation at Mac & Joes in Oxford Ohio if I would be interested in helping him put together a Concert & Show to benefit Foster Children in Southwest Ohio, obviously my answer was both eager and yes! Over the next few months up until show time April 30th, 2011.

(Suitcase Full of Blues presented by Foster Child Enrichment Council and Jimmy D Rogers on April 30th, 2011. A benefit Musical Blues Concert put on FREE for the purpose of collecting Suitcases for Children and raise awareness for Foster & Adoption Families)

As the efforts’ and benevolence continues, the local College Corner Food Pantry finds itself less than fully stocked and I was grateful to offer a couple of my Original Oils ( ABBY & THE VIEW ) up for Auction to support and provide a small amount of funds to help with the larger picture. It tugs at my heart to the struggles many are facing in hunger and pain in this wealthy yet ignorant Country we reside. How can we continue to ignore the fatal actions of a few that impact the masses?

Although the establishment of my Gallery & Studio offered great hope and energy, it unfortunately became a financial & health risk draw that became too much to handle without a promotional event, “Artist’s in the Corner” which was held in Downtown College Corner (Outside Oxford). The building itself and the owners unfortunately failed to honor the remodeling agreement and profited from my generosity. However, the Art & Music Festival went off well and 20 Individual Artists & Musicians performed all day long. Many of the Artisans (Dan Moore, Neil Simak, Howard Krauss, Brittany Lawson, Food Vendor Black & Brew, and many more …) The Musical acts were Head-Lined by the National Blues Group, Bad Men on a Mission. And the Best of Show was awarded to Pam Howard, resident artist of the Oxford Community Arts Center. The entire show was a success and although I am not there to organize another event, it is my prayer that the community will find hope and energy to have another …

The exposure of my artistry, and in June the painting “ACT” also becomes the online featured image for the 2011 SOS Art Academy of Cincinnati. This made the second year in a row of being a featured artist in this exhibit and I find the attention a great asset to my portfolio including the summer of 2011, Oxford Starbucks again provides wall space for four works of motif display in the local shop…

As the summer draws on, my visions and talent explodes into a prolific pattern of painting in the studio. Many of these paintings find a new audience and gain Fans as some are auctioned off online. A mixed-media painting “Garden Study” sells prints within the first five minutes of being posted online…

In mid July 2011, my next work in LIVE Studio is based on a conception that I found floating in my view of creative Fine Art. It introduced a Full body impression representation of “UNITY” An acrylic body painting of two women lying opposite and then covered with raw canvas. The reaction to this work has been both excellent and confused. Either way, it draws the viewer into the image and the print sales along with the YouTube video, allows me a point of satisfaction.

With a full heart and gratitude for the year, I am now personally concerned for my health and safety of my Gallery due to the failed work completion by the owners and the neglected response. As always, I have the task of protecting myself and begin to toss around the idea of making a move and transition in my Artistic skills and journey. After much consultation, a choice of studying & living in Santa Fe NM is made to enhance and grow beyond my limits. In doing so, the final analysis was referenced in this way – “If I were an Engineer, I would want MIT in my experience” well, if I am a real artist & author then Santa Fe or NY need to be included in my path. Since I have comfort with the Southwest, the choice was easy. The move however was not and yet at the day’s end, I am now a living Artist with permanent and tangible Art Auction results. Many of these works, including the “Coldplay”, “Reach”, “ACT” & “Passing” all sold for prices of 200-600 each and offered a recorded history of my talent – Bless you to all who now carry my heart, passion and soul in my painting with you.

Upon my arrival here in Santa Fe, I have been met with some challenges in securing a residence. It appears that Santa Fe housing market has created a number of people willing to attempt to take advantage or misrepresent their intentions, anyone besides me see a pattern here ??? LoL J

Ironically, in the time I have also found a local radio show, book store and other outlets that will perhaps offer a place of exposure for my Memoir Norma Jean’s Sun. I am now a Member of the Art Institute, Auditing Member of Santa Fe Creative Fine Arts and a begin Workshop studies in January 2012. In the first week of December I have found an exhilarating and fear of the unknown event. Through a Marketing and Promotional program of Amazon, my book became Ranked #1 Bestseller Memoir on Amazon for 48 hours and sold over 900 copies. I will be happy to discover the reviews and results yet to come in the new-year; I will let you know when I find out more. Either way, again – Thank You !!!

However, as many times over I have found comfort in knowing this: My deeds are honest, My Heart is Safe and My Soul is Clean! In God’s Grace and love I have found a point of spiritual reference that keeps me at least guided in times of struggle. This world and life for each of us has never been a complete smooth travel. Nor do I expect the greater Icons of what I see for my artistic life to be available without time and pain. I am however completely aware of the serendipity of my experiences and path involved. I arrived here and went to a private party one night and met a man they call Fish, a Woman named Joy, an Indian named Alex and a Host of others simply known as friends.

In the short time of my appearance in the Southern Desert, I have been reinstated to the comfort of clear skies and fresh air. The brisk cold mornings and the warmth of pure Sun. The view of a spiritual horizon made by a force none can ever touch yet we all seek to feel. I place a large amount of my heart and spirit into each meeting of a person, place or time. I suppose that is why I have found moments of frustration, I take you at your word and give you all of mine. It is times of struggle that perhaps the poem “Foot Steps” and the Serenity Prayer become my best companion.

I suppose I will bring this to a close but I feel I have left something out. Perhaps it is my deep Gratitude for each of you who continue to love me from a far. Support my heart or give me a moment of your time. I can never thank you enough. I sincerely hope this letter finds you in good health, prosper in a time of need and that your world is filled with kindness and benevolence to others. Do not wait for the invite to be kind, offer without reward and watch the world open to a place of rest.

God Bless & Happy Holidays
Kris

Norma Jean's Sun, Memoir by Kris Courtney

Based on a True Story

Author Kris Courtney

It is this kind of brave honesty of confession and growing philosophy that makes the book unique. A " must-read " for all who ponder their roots and family life. This is an intense , compelling story of a baby who was born defective in body but not in spirit.
The reader must be prepared for a journey like no other that visits incest between cousins and the heartbreak that follows. Written with grace and style,
Norma Jean's Sun should be on the New York Times bestseller list within the year !

What makes this book different and easy to read is the personal manner in which Courtney writes: 'I know that most of you who read this will struggle with, perhaps even reject, the idea that I have lived my entire life feeling as if an existence as Frankenstein was my only fate in life. But since I can recall, I have had the overwhelming desire that when I met someone new, he will look me in the eye and not be compelled or distracted to look at my body, my hands, or the mental equipment supporting them.' And at the end of his book he writes: 'If you have ever wondered about another human who is different from you in appearance, try to find the similarities, not the differences. We are more alike than we are different.'
