“It’s OK to be Different” @ItsOKScooter

 Ability is as Ability Does...

As written, a New Children’s Book, It’s OK Scooter

http://www.amazon.com/Its-Ok-Scooter-Childrens-Book/dp/1507623720/

(Published & Released May 15th, 2015 in SW Florida) by Author & American Artist Kris Courtney inspires kids to look past what we do not understand to those characteristics that make us all more alike than different! As many who fear what they do not understand may ask; “What happened to you?” a childlike answer would serve as a familiar response to avoid justification to being broken, “That’s just the way ‘It was supposed to be”  The word It, becomes a personal reference!

As a child with profound disabilities that included multiple amputations, birth defects and deformities, I began life at age 3 days confined to a full body cast and the isolation of being different.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0578020599In my first book & personal memoir,  Norma Jean’s Sun:

I authored a detailed and engaging perspective of this life as a child with disabilities.  In that accounting, it was clear that I had more messages to author and one of those would be to a younger audience.  Having a Beagle Dog named “Scooter” as a kid, although not disabled, His ability to Love, Forgive and Champion beyond his own life to inspire others with complete and child-like acceptance is a message of Hope presented in this Fictional Children’s Book!

Scooter itself in a name offers a smile to those who read this 26 page Illustrated & Rhythmic dialogue to a journey from the Indiana Farm on a cold and windy winter night. Born as a runt in a litter of five, soon it is clear that Scooter was different from the rest!  Not knowing what or how to adapt, Scooter is soon taken away to a shelter and left to be forgotten…  And although those of us who have daily fears and struggle that are not taken to animal shelters to be forgotten, there are parallels to this journey that some will relate to a more personal emotion.  And in the same light of life, Scooter is soon rescued by the innocent gift of love offered by a child seeking a friend.  Perhaps we all can associate to our own advocate in life that has always stood firm in our shadow, pushing us to the front for a personal identity beyond the disability…  And in that single moment of courage or champion of task, life becomes more about Ability!
https://www.facebook.com/ItsOKScooter

In the midst of Celebration, the reader will continue to follow Scooter & Ginger into a life of value and coming into their own!  For this author, it personally took me 45 years to finally become myself!  As the challenge of youth, destructive behaviors and attempts to become a defined image of normal, my life always took on a repetitive pattern of not good enough, basic flaws or lacking the same gifts of those who appeared to be in such warm light of a reflective life. A mirror has always been quick to remind me of the precipice that sits just a step away.  But ultimately as with most who cross into a life of ability, a series of events rewrite an ending to my life and Scooters!  His journey full circle through the Seasons brings him into a place of Service & Gratitude for a path of purpose and direction!  As those who follow will soon discover in the end, we are all more alike than we are different!  A personal lesson that has fueled my creativity to author other perspectives related to a life considered broken by social standards!
https://www.facebook.com/ItsOKScooter

It’s OK Scooter™ also contains a 4 page set of coloring illustrations and biographies of Kris Courtney & Judy Cowan Lee (Co-Illustrator).  Also Contained, the reader (Age 3-8) will discover an artistic expression through colorful images, easy to understand language and joyful subtle messages that will leave most with the overwhelming conclusion that “It’s OK to be Different”

Summer Reading - FREE eBook PDF Download

Norma Jean's Sun, Memoir

Nominated for Best Memoir of 2009
Sound travels far inside a home at night for every child who hears the whispers and tears through the upstairs banister. Just as this ripple in one family’s history grew to a wave of fear, so did the stature of the individuals who had witnessed it. The future carries the scars from the harm done before. One hopes that the past will allow us to shape and control the next step, to avoid the dangers, the foolish errors and mistakes that echo the last generation, and the one before that. But instead, the path, though inviting with its colors of gold and silver and the sounds of laughter and joy, is also shrouded in mystery, obscured in grays. Never in our silent moments of illusion do we sense the dark parallel that lives beside us. Nor do we suspect the carrier.

For the next 30 days, you'll be able to make pledges to help support this project, ranging from $5 to whatever you can afford. For your pledge, you can select one of the reward packages—listed to the right—of equal or lesser value to your pledge. You can always pledge more than the minimum to get a specific reward if you want. Your credit card, Paypal or other account will not actually be charged at the time you make your pledge, and you can change your mind right up to the final deadline.

If the final deadline comes and we've reached our goal, then everyone gets charged the amount they pledged. But if for some reason we don't meet our goal, then the whole thing is called off. "AMAZING MEMOIR" G. Sterling Zinsmeyer

So if you felt a little ripped off by Jim Frey’s book A Million Little Pieces I strongly urge you to pick up or download Norma Jean's Sun, Memoir

Courtney weaves family secrets, with physical & emotional challenges in a life’s journey that will leave you breathless. Faced with unspeakable physical challenges Kris Courtney moves through his life experiences sometimes bravely sometimes embracing despair but always perceiving his life challenges with insights that will touch your core!

I was humbled by reading this book in a way that totally surprised me. All of us have our challenges in life but I was in awe not only by his conquest but also the depths to which he sunk and survived.

Mr. Courtney not only has a sense of humor about his exploits and situation but also  somehow keeps his sense of proportion in recalling his past.

This is not just another memoir of recovery, it’s a tale of courage, family failings and devotion and most of all self discovery. One man’s detached observation of his family, himself, and life ‘s twists, turns and fate!

It will leave you with much more of a willingness to accept
life’s  erratic patterns with a zest for self discovery and adventure!

Norma Jean's Sun Memoir ( Based on a True Story ) "A Wonderful commentary on the very things that make us all human" "Brave honesty of confession, makes the book unique" "Touching story, full of hope" The story is not only convincingly true, but will rivet the reader with its genuine and unassuming pathos. It is this kind of brave honesty of confession and growing philosophy that makes the book unique. Miraculous tale of how a boy, born into unimaginable physical and emotional pain and destined to be a misfit, finds his way in a world of â€oeothers.” Few could survive so many torturous years of surgical intervention and a ensuing lifelong struggle with drugs and alcohol addiction and come out ahead. This moving tale reveals not only the struggle and heartrending elements of generational lives â€oegone wrong,” but also the love and growth of a human being overcoming the odds and determined to find a way to live life to the fullest. Based on a true story, the authorâ€s unapologetic prose prompts enduring ethical questions and makes a gripping, personal read. Norma Jean's Sun is painfully reflective yet ultimately hopeful, a story told through the eyes of a boy who believes he has been mistakenly born into the world and a man who conquers physical and emotional injustice--and thrives. The reader will be challenged to answer the difficult questions of right and wrong as they may apply to his or her own life. It is clear that it is the hope of this author that the reader's conclusions will lead to a more fulfilled view of the "parallel beauty that lives just beneath the surface for us all."

5 Star Book Review - "Best I have Read"

Norma Jean's Sun: True Story (Paperback)

I have read this book twice now, as I frequently do with stories that move me. The first time I was so overcome with the depth of despair and the self destructive behavior of the writer, that I didn't fully grasp the depth of the love he was shown by some of his family members and the ultimate enlightenment he experienced. The second reading drew me completely into his world and the roller coaster ride that has been his life. I felt my own heart aching at the accounting of his mother's passing. I smiled at the successes and the happy encounters he experienced. I felt frustration at the waste of potential. I find myself longing for a final chapter that tells of a happy, pain free, fulfilling life. One that I expect will never come.

The accounting was very frank, not holding back on details that one would generally not want to admit to. The story held my attention and I found it difficult to put the book down for the few short breaks I took. The pictures added a personal touch, and while I would have preferred to see captions, I felt like I could guess who the subjects were and felt more attached to the characters as a result.

I found myself wanting more details and a more cohesive story, but I am more a fan of fiction, so this is a somewhat unfamiliar genre for me. As memoirs go, this is one of the best I have read. I may read it again sometime.

Been there, Done that - I'll be here on Sunday

2011 end times prediction

The 2011 end times prediction made by Christian radio host Harold Camping states that the Rapture (in premillennial theology, the taking up into heaven of God's elect people) will take place on May 21, 2011 at 6 p.m. local time (the rapture will sweep the globe time zone by time zone) and that the end of the world as we know it will take place five months later on October 21, 2011. Camping, president of the Family Radio Christian network, claims the Bible as his source and says May 21 will be the date of the Rapture and the day of judgment "beyond the shadow of a doubt". His followers claim that around 200 million people (approximately 3% of the world's population) will be raptured.

In my life I have seen many things, experienced many loss and died twice! Yes, I said died. In 2008 I had a full GI Bleed and lost 7 units of blood, spent 5 full days in ICU, transfusions and much more medical issue than one could have hoped for that day I woke at 8am. Not knowing I would be dead 4 hours later, I had no need or desire to scurry around for a last moment forgiveness as most do when warned before. I'm not knocking forgiveness, it has its place and the acts that are promoted, serve the audience well for the effect it gives, peace of mind...

What I really want to express here through a couple excerpts of my Memoir and the fact that when I experienced personal rapture, the event was silent. Not even a chance to say good bye. In addition to the GI Bleed, I have also successfully committed suicide.

In a moment of desperation, the previous person whom I no longer wish to be, selfishly committed an act of rebellion against the very fear many are talking about today by taking my life in a car at 100mph with purpose and sober focus. As that car rolled and tumbled, I found that God had captured my soul and heart long before I felt the touch and as I bounced around like a rag-doll, his hand reached inside that car and without "Any" doubt said: "It's Okay, I've got you now" It is there I have resided ever since. I stroll to the tips of his hand many times to peak at the fall, entertain the other side. Just check to see if Hell is still there perhaps ...

In both of these events, one predictable and the other not, I came out of that experience an new man and individual capable of an understanding not known prior. That doesn't mean I am anything other than old fool and a man who believes. And I believe that if in Fact "YOUR World" ends on May 21, 2001 - that you are able to find peace and transparent passage into a vision that you have come to terms with. Mine results in an understanding that my Deeds are done, My Heart is Safe and my Soul is Clean!

One last thing, as a direction of confusion I have wrestled with self worth over the years and attempted to use objects to define my path. I still do perhaps through my art and book but these are the assets I own without reserve and it took me 40 years to purchase them. They can not be taken away by any other means than vacancy. SO I share with you something that was given to me many years ago and pray that it gives you a pause for thought and consideration:

When I base my life on Sex, I'm always lonely...
When I base my life on Money, I'm always Broke...
When I base my life on Prestige, I am always Second Best...
When I put my life on a Spiritual Principle, there is Never a Second Best...

That's about it, here are a couple excerpts from the book that speak to my personal experience and only my experience. Bless you and I'll see you Sunday ...

Kris
www.kriscourtney.com

(pg 230)
Time was empty; it paused unwittingly.
My suicide attempt left me with the car crushed around my less-than five- foot body. I was on top of the drive shaft and between the bucket seats. The cartilage in my chest and back had been shredded and torn. My face was studded with broken glass and blood was everywhere. My legs were battered and bruised, flakes of severed glass particles protruding from their flesh. My hands shook in terror. I hung in an upside-down, crooked position, which led me to think I was in a ditch. Was this the feeling I had missed so many years ago when Hollywood had lost his life on a similar stretch of road? “God, help me!” I cried.

The officer hovered over me. He assumed my tire had gotten stuck in the gravel and I had over corrected. I let him believe it. I replied with a strained “yes,” and that was the end of the discussion. I can say with out reservation that as the car slid and tumbled over the pavement, as it went crashing and splintering into the night, nothing could have saved me but the divine hand of God, which had reached itself into that battered car and wrapped its palm around me to comfort and protect me.

I had raged and revolted against the force of creation responsible for my grotesque image for all the years of my life, but in that moment I had experienced the touch of God’s hand. I suddenly knew that His life force existed; I had no question, no doubt. It would be many years before I again felt His touch as I had that day. But my belief and trust in a God who knows me, who resides over our souls, who shares His bounty of love, has never wavered again.

It would also be years before I could accept this divine love.

Norma Jean's Sun Memoir ( Based on a True Story )

My life has been filled with penalties...penalties I suffered for the actions of others as well as my own. Some will say punishment is of our own making and I would have to agree, and the weight of this knowledge I will take with me when I go. Yet I have endured the path, the dusty Midway that existed on trinkets and glitz, and returned to that same illusion over and over in an effort to grab that elusive ring of change, the golden ring to solve my struggles, a reward to counter the penalties of sin.

Forgiveness is only a short grasp away.

A Gardian Angel - Norma Jean

Norma Jean's Sun, Based on a True Story

Available Online & through your Local Book Store, Ask for it by name ...

I recall when Mothers Day would allow expressions of Joy & Happiness. One such year I regained enough composure to send her a Dozen Yellow Roses, her favorite ...

Norma’s desire for a modeling or acting career had faded, but she was still a shining star. The year before, for her birthday, she’d been given the gift of a full portrait, professionally painted, to use to pursue a modeling career. Norma had become a woman, a beautiful woman, who learned early on that her grace and education, combined with God’s gift of beauty, would take her far. (Pg 30)

Even though Norma was often distracted (by what I later learned were her own fears), she was constantly attending to my needs as well as a new bride could. (Pg 127)

Her inner beauty did not take a distant second either, as light radiated from every corner of her being. 'This too shall pass...

Norma Jean's Sun Memoir ( Based on a True Story ) The story is not only convincingly true, but will rivet the reader with its genuine and unassuming pathos. It is this kind of brave honesty of confession and growing philosophy that makes the book unique. Miraculous tale of how a boy, born into unimaginable physical and emotional pain and destined to be a misfit, finds his way in a world of “others.” Few could survive so many torturous years of surgical intervention and a ensuing lifelong struggle with drugs and alcohol addiction and come out ahead. This moving tale reveals not only the struggle and heartrending elements of generational lives “gone wrong,” but also the love and growth of a human being overcoming the odds and determined to find a way to live life to the fullest. Based on a true story, the author’s unapologetic prose prompts enduring ethical questions and makes a gripping, personal read.

Wishing all who have lost, a Sincere Mothers Day ...
